ALIMONY
Alimony is financial support paid by one divorced or divorcing party
to the other when there is a real need for the assistance. There are
various types of alimony available and the court will take into account
a number of factors before making an award of alimony. Important factors
to be considered by the court are: the length of the marriage; the ages
of the parties; the disparity in the parties’ incomes and assets; the
current needs and/or long-term needs of the requesting party; whether
the requesting party needs rehabilitative education or training to become
fully employed and whether they have a well-founded rehabilitative plan.
Other factors may be considered by the court as well.
